Coffee in Montreal, CA

I spend most of my day daydream about coffee, looking for the best cafe in town no mater how far it is, and when I’m done I think of the next time I’ll be able to sip another heavenly drink the next day. I take my coffee seriously. Recently I traveled to Montreal, Canada for pleasure, on my way I decided to write my rating and opinion of the Cafes based on their coffee beans quality, and taste.

Van Houtte Cafe

A family member introduced me to this cafe while we were walking in the streets on Old Montreal. A splendidIMG_0916 place if you ask me, it has the mixture of french, old, modern, and natural Atmosphere. I was surprised when I was informed that in French people don’t pronounce the ‘H’. Thus, technically speaking the restaurant’s name is Van Outte and not Van Houtte [if you are a native English speaker].

Location: 20 Rue Notre-Dame Ouest, Montreal, QC H2Y 1B9

Score:  7/10

Over all: My order was a simple Cappuccino and a raspberry scone. Van Houtte is known locally as a cafe and not as a professional barista. Therefore, I ranked it along other cafes such as Tim Horton, Starbucks, Second Cup, etc. Thus, looking from this angle Van Houtte’s coffee was an average in taste. It was more towards harsh [dark roast like] coffee then the soft creamy texture, nevertheless they serve a lot of coffee bean types that you could choose from. I went with what they offer normally. It would serve well for a quick pick me up cup coffee, or a meeting with old friends. Finally, it is important to say that the food selection was not my favorite considering am a vegetarian.

Second Cup Cafe

Second on our list is the famous [at least in my home town] Second Cup. Interesting fact is that the Cafe logo is completely different from the IMG_1263international franchise.

Location:It’s new near – 1176 Rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest, Montréal, QC H3B 1K1 [shop next to it]

Score: 8/10

Over all: my order was a simple American [black coffee] with cream, and a slice of marble cake. The coffee was better then Van Houtte in that it was much smoother and easier on the stomach [not a hash strong beans]. Great for after/during university work as of its friendly work space, and good price = good taste coffee. However, the cake was too old [not fresh] and differently not the purchase.

Time Hortons (TH)

Now comes the amazing and globally known Tim Hortons. A Canadian flagship for coffee just like Starbucks. Tim Hortons CoffeeThis Time Horton was a quick stop as I was on my way to Ottawa, Ontario I stopped at a rest area to get some pick me up coffee and I got just what I needed.

Location: 445 Chemin de la Grande Ligne, Rigaud, QC J0P 1P0

Score: 8.5/10

Over all: The surprising thing is that Tim Hortons in my home town has the worst food, coffee, and area. While Starbucks has the lion share of everything. However, in Canada just flip everything you know about TH and enjoy the coffee and donuts, or hundred other bites. The coffee was as good as Second Cup, cheaper, and better food quality thats why I could not possibly equal Second Cup to Tim Hortons to score. So if you are ever in Canada you must try TH coffee.

Myriade

Ending with a special Cafe that truly left a mark on my coffee buds and that’s Myriade. I found this small cafe while searching the web. However, even after asking some locals it was hard to spot as due to its small hidden place [perhaps in winter it’s much difficult to find stuff under snow].
Note: It may be unfair to compare this cafe with the other 3 coffee shops as it’s not a quick cafe but a professional barista.

Location: 1432 Rue Mackay, Montréal, QC H3G 2H7IMG_1424

Score: 10/10

Over all: I’ve only this type of good beans and good Flat white ratio in two cafes till this day, and Myriade is the third one. The coffee beans as I guess from Mexico as it has this earthly ground coffee taste which goes very well with coffees such as flat white, and cortado. It was so good I had to order a second cup [pun not intended]. The food selection was good, they offered a low-fat, vegan, and low carb pastries while maintaining an amazing flavor. I recommend visiting this cafe by anyone in Montreal.

Note: The cafe space is a little small [especially during winter] so a take-away is a good back-up plan.

I hope you enjoyed this blog as much as I did. Please share if you have visited another cafes or if you have any other comments.
